The Imbalance of Elements in your Natal Chart, pt. 2

Hello again! Want to catch up on part one? Now, onto part two. An overabundance of Fire can go two ways: passion before reason, acting without thinking, and unearned confidence with no direction; or all of that passion, action, and confidence directed towards a clear goal. You can use this to bring out whatever you lack in your chart. Excessive Air cares more about words than they do about people, logic and reason reign supreme over emotions. With Air dominating your chart, it's easy to remain detached from the corporeal in favor of the cerebral; but to balance what's missing you must experience the tangible. Consider it research.

Excessive Earth is a consumerist dream. Sorry, but it's true. Between the Taurus ruled Second House of possessions and money, the Virgo ruled Sixth House of daily work, and the Capricorn ruled Tenth House of your career, an overabundance of Earth means you work more to acquire more. When your worth is based on what you have - your car, your house, your Saint Laurent bag - you miss out on what you actually have: people in your life who love and support you. Don't let yourself forget that.

A Water dominant natal chart is tricky and, I feel, the most extreme out of all of the elements. On the one hand, you can be imaginative and empathic. On the other hand, you can be easily influenced and prone to changeable moods. You're also highly sensitive, which can be a good and bad thing. It makes you more attuned and compassionate to the world around you, but it's also emotionally draining and can cause you to withdraw into yourself. So, the good is pretty good, but the bad is dreadful. With this, finding balance and stable ground for yourself is difficult; especially if you're lacking Earth. I think the best route is to find what quiets your emotions; maybe meditation, or yoga, or cooking, or whatever it is that gives you calm. When it feels like someone is manipulating your emotions, remember this: opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one and they're usually full of shit. (Admittedly, that's easy for me to say. Go back to the first paragraph to read all about a Fire dominant's unearned confidence.)

As always, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

The Imbalance of Elements in your Natal Chart, pt. 1

Just like nobody is truly crazy, but some are crazier than others, nobody's natal chart is evenly balanced; but some are more unbalanced than others. When there is a noticeable lack of one element and an overabundance of another, it comes across in who we are and how the world responds to us. Take me for example, I'm Fire dominant and lack Water (its such a Fire thing to use yourself as an example, by the way). Nowhere in my chart is this made more clear than my Aries Moon and my Cancer Mars. Aries Moons are known for being quick to anger and even quicker to forget why they were angry in the first place; whereas Cancer sits in its shell accumulating hurt, until next thing you know it's hanging off your finger and is never letting go.

The same is true for every person's natal chart, what we have and what we lack are at odds with each other. The problem with this though is the very human trait to let what we're missing define us or to overcompensate for it. A lack of Fire causes a lack of passion, of creativity, and just joy for life. We've all met people who are the living embodiment of meh, just as we've all met people who are always having THE BEST TIME EVER!!!! and you wonder if they are ever chill. No Earth can swing in the direction of no practicality, the people who bounce from job to job and have no idea what a 401k is; to pragmatism being the basis for all decisions, like accountants. Lack of Air, which is communicative, means difficulty expressing yourself. This can mean that you aren't particularly talkative, or when speaking you lose the plot halfway through. Lack of Water is a lack of the constant ebb of emotions. What you're feeling can be a mystery to yourself and you can come across as cold. Because Water is also spiritual, it can lead to an interest in things like astrology and Tarot. I'd easily bet that's where my love of both comes from.

Unfortunately, there's no easy fix to change something like this. When a dominant part of your natal chart is unevolved, you at least have a starting place and something to work with. With this, where do you start and what do you do? I think our dominant elements can help us bring out our lacking ones, which I'll get into next week when I write about both the good and the bad of an overabundance of an element.

Your North Node Points You in the Right Direction, Your South Node Makes it Difficult to Follow

Out of everything in your natal chart, and there's a lot, your North Node is the sign with an arrow saying 'Go this way. For the love of god, go this way.' Your South Node is the bad habits you fall back on. We all know this, we've all experienced this. I consider bad habits to be like any vice, there's nothing good about it and yet we can't stop it.

So, what do you do? I've written about this pretty often, because I'm a total hippie, but self-awareness is the first step. Why do you fall back on your vices? What is it distracting you from? The next step is following your passion. Again, total hippie. You don't have to be good at it, you don't have to make money from it, it just needs to feed your soul. I know 'feeding your soul' is a cliché, but there's truth to it. Making time to do something you love goes a long way to giving yourself happiness.

Which leads us to the last step. I'm a firm believer that in order to be good for anyone else, you have to be good for yourself first. Only when you've given yourself happiness can you direct it out into the world. And that's your North Node's purpose. Its much like Saturn in that way, it's here to make us learn something. Whether it's about ourselves, how we relate to other people, or what we can give to people depends on which house your North Node is in.

As always, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

Working Past a Debilitated Mars

Mars is the planet that lights a fire under our ass, figuratively speaking. The ruler of Aries and traditional ruler of Scorpio, it's the planet that gives us our drive and our ambition. Which is why its exalted in Capricorn. Mars does well in a sign that is steady, thoughtful, and logical. This doesn't do any good for me. My Sun may be in Capricorn, but my Mars sit way across the Zodiac in Cancer. In the Twelfth house. Oy.

It doesn't do well there. Scorpio may be a Water Sign, but I consider it to be far removed from the emotionality of Cancer and Pisces. Scorpio is the dark, silent depths, there's a propensity for stillness and calculation. Pisces gets swept away by the water, and Cancer drowns in their own sensitivity and vulnerability. Which, in turn, drowns out the fire in Mars.

I imagine it's not all that dissimilar from having a Cancer Sun or Moon. When the Moon is your rules, you feel its waxes and wanes. And when the Moon is the ruler of the planet that causes your drive to get shit done, you definitely feel it. I've touched on this before, but this is a subject that I have extensive first-hand experience on. I understand being afraid of failure, afraid of putting yourself out there for criticism and possible rejection, so you end up rationalizing not doing what you want to do. I suck at this, nobody cares, people will hate it, or whatever else you can come up with. I feel like being dishonest with yourself to that magnitude can become an impossible habit to break. I'm still working on it myself. I suppose my point to all of this is, you have to hit a point where you stop buying into your own bullshit so the knots can loosen and you can move forward. Even if only a little. And to be proud of yourself when you do.

Anyways, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

My Moon Makes Me feel Like a Fraud, How About You?

The moon is our emotional nature. It's what makes us tick and how reactive (or not) we are. Obviously, short of being a sociopath, its impossible to go through life without feeling emotion. And obviously, again, writing is highly emotional. Not only in the sense that we impart emotions onto our characters, but also our attachment to these characters. Not to mention, all the emotions that happen before the writing process, during the writing process, and after the writing process.

I feel like I've written about this often, but I know this is a daily reality for most people. Particularly people in creative fields. Our minds get the best of us. And, women are more prone to depression and Imposter Syndrome. How lucky for me. I struggle with both, the latter in particular. It was one of the reasons I went months without writing. All through writing Ascendent, it boggled my mind when people told me that they liked it; because it didn't seem possible that it could be true. It's published, and it still seems like it can't possibly be true.

I know most of these posts end up making me sound like I'm a school guidance counselor from a 90's teen rom-com (For the record, I'm twenty-four. So, I think that makes me too young?), so I'm going to skip the platitudes this week. But, I like to think even one person could find this and it could break through the horrible headspace our asshole brains love to put us in long enough to realize that you're not alone. Because we all need support, someone who listens to us. Really listens. I was born with my support system and I like to think it makes me more aware of its importance. I can't imagine I would be sitting here typing this without her.

I know this was kind of (or majorly) depressing (I think it has something to do with the seemingly neverending teenagers who od. I think if they had just one person who is caring, compassionate, and listens it could prevent so much.), but thank you for reading anyway and tell me what you think in the comments. Bye (an exclamation mark seems inappropriate here, am I the only one?)

Venus is Less Superficial than You Would Think

Venus is a benefic planet that rules over the two most sought-after things in life - love, and money. If you want to get technical, money and love since the second house is our possessions and what we value, while the seventh house is our relationships. Romantic ones, not platonic ones. Friendship is the eleventh house.

But, back to what we value. Depending on the aspects made to Venus and its placement within your birth chart, as well as the sign and potential planets in the second house, what we value can be construed as a nice way of saying someone is materialistic. Say that to a Taurus and learn the hard way why Taurus's symbol is a bull. But I digress. Venus and the signs it rules (Taurus and Libra) are some of the few placements that give us an appreciation for the arts, the other being Neptune and Pisces. Personally, I find Venus more useful; it doesn't cover everything in a rose-colored fog the way Neptune does.

My third house is in Libra, which is Gemini's house and whose ruling planet is Mercury, and it gave me a love of words and reading. I had no idea it would transition into writing, it was something I had never considered I could do or that I would love. When I'm not doubting myself at least. My point in all of this? Use your Venus to find what you love, even if you think its something you won't be good at or people will mock you for. By the way, fuck those people. Anyone who's shitty to someone for going after what they want is just envious of the courage they wish they had, which is an unacknowledged, universal truth in my opinion.

Anyway, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

Saturn isn’t as Bad as We Think

Saturn, my sun's ruling planet, is the dourest out of all the planets. Karma, restriction, lessons, these are words the commonly crop up when discussing Saturn. It's the cautious part of you, the part that doesn't take anything at face value.  And, because Saturn is time, it's the planet that makes you wait. Because of course it is.

But, Saturn doesn't really throw its wet blanket self over your entire life until your Saturn Return (when Saturn is in the exact place it was when you were born), which is around age 28 to 30. And, whichever house Saturn is in, you better have your shit together or it will be all fucked up. The short lesson in Saturn is finished.

I know my intention when writing about astrology was how to relate it and use it as a writer; but, I've found through all of this that not all of my placements are applicable to that. In my case, my Saturn is in the Seventh House, the house of relationships, which I can't imagine pulling directly from. I know, as a writer, you will inevitably and subconsciously pull from yourself and your life. But, that's completely different from taking everything about yourself and your life and laying it all out there. This might be a personal thing, but I have such a block against that. And, we'll just disregard the fact that I'm a few years off from my Saturn Return anyway.

Anyway, my point to all of this is that I think Saturn can get a bad reputation or its intentions for us can be misconstrued. Unlike Pluto's death and rebirth, Saturn is death pure and simple. But, that's not always a bad thing. Its the death of our blinders when it comes to ourselves. It wants us to be self-aware and to examine where we fall short in life. That's why it keeps coming back around and keeps fucking our shit up until we get it. Because it wants us to better ourselves.

Look What Uranus Made Me Do

Uranus, named after the Greek God of the sky Ouranus (which means, yes, people have been making your anus jokes longer than they were ever funny), is one of the more confusing planets in a natal chart. To me, at least. Even just looking at the bare facts of the planet doesn't make any sense. Uranus is a water planet and is the modern ruler of Aquarius, an air sign. See what I mean? It switches back and forth and disrupts whatever house it's in. Mine sits in my sixth house, the house of menial, everyday drudgery and it sucks.

Uranus, along with Jupiter and Neptune, is what makes it impossible for me to sit down and get my work done.  Seeing as it conjuncts my Sun, it is considered a creative, but rebellious, aspect. All this manages to do is make me crazy in tightly controlled environments. Which is another reason I hated school. That, and the constant bullying.  So, how to put a lazy Uranus to work? Between this, Sun in the fifth house, Jupiter in an air sign, and a Taurus Midheaven, I'm lazy. No, seriously, I'm asking. I just don't have the answer today.

I suppose it's the same answer I, and every other person, always give. Work past it and put it to use. I swear that's what all of these posts have boiled down to. All of the aspects in my chart make me lazy and artistic, woe to me.

I'll just stop typing now.

My Love/Hate Relationship with Neptune

Because it's not just Jupiter that fucks my shit up. To give you some context, Pisces, which is ruled by Neptune, was originally ruled by Jupiter. And, in some ways, Neptune and Jupiter are one in the same. While Jupiter makes you so focused on the big picture you miss the details, Neptune gives you rose colored glasses so you end up missing everything. Which isn't necessarily all bad. That rose-colored fog is associated with creativity. Every artist, writer, and musician have Neptune to thank. Of course, every member of the 27 club probably has a poorly aspected Neptune to thank for their membership.

But, anyway. Putting your Neptune to work when you write is the easy part, getting it to back off so you can do all the other parts that come with publishing a book is quite another. As it is, I had to step away while writing this and instead of getting back to work like Saturn would, I dicked around for an hour. Because that's what Neptune does.

So, how to work against it? I've found the Pomodoro Technique to be effective on days where I actually want to get things done. On days when I don't want to do anything? I try anyway. I know it's trite and I know it can suck, but working past whatever it is that's preventing you from doing what you want to do (and I should emphasize what YOU want to do, not what anyone else wants you to do) is better for you emotionally than not. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Once again, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

Your Sun is More than a Generalization

Sun Sign (or Star Sign) is the one part of astrology that even a person with almost no interest in it - beyond what's in the paper - can tell you when asked. It's almost common knowledge at this point. Scorpio is mysterious, Virgo is Type A, Leo is the dramatic one, and Aquarius is the space cadet. It's also the reason I first looked into astrology. Because, as a Capricorn, I felt like I was mislabeled.  I am not, nor have I ever been, career-oriented and rife with ambition. I'm not cold, at least I like to think I'm not, and I'm not materialistic (much). But, in general, none of us are the clicky archetypes you find in the paper. We're humans and, by definition, extraordinarily more complicated than that.

So, let's look at what our Sun actually is. It's your ego. It's not what you present to the world like your Ascendent sign or your emotional nature like your Moon sign, it's who you are. You with your clearest sense of self. The most your Sun Sign - and its ruling planet - will do is color the house your Sun is in, as well as the aspects to it. To use me as an example, because who else's chart would I know best, my Sun falls in the fifth house with Neptune and Uranus conjunct it. Trust me on this, it's a whole lot of flighty and lazy. What my Capricorn Sun - and the Saturn that rules it - does is add some pragmaticism. Some being the operative word.

I know most of this post has been deeply entrenched in motivational poster territory, but I think this is something that we hear often but without sincerity. Particularly for women. But it's true. Our worth, the best, most amazing thing we can offer people, is our sense of self. Our confidence in who we are, what we want, and where we're going.

Anyway, thanks for reading and let me know what you think in the comments. Bye!

When You Feel Like Your Mercury isn’t Useful, it’s Probably Mercury Retrograde

If you have any interest at all in astrology, you will have undoubtedly encountered talk of Mercury Retrograde. Now, for the skeptics, it's an excuse hippies use because they feel foggy today. For those of us who place stock in such things, Mercury appearing to move backwards can cause all of sorts of problems. Namely, good luck getting any work done. At least, that's how it is for me. You're also advised against signing contracts and anything to do with money at this time.

So, does that mean, if you want to get any writing done, you'll be blocked until September 5th (the next time Mercury goes out of retrograde)? Not exactly. For me, I try to make the brain fog work for me, rather than against me. It requires you to be more thoughtful. What are your characters doing? What do you want them to say? What do you want to happen next? If anything, because I have to stop and think, it helps me link together what I've written when Mercury is out of retrograde.

As with everything related to astrology, it all comes down to the sign the planet is in and how it is aspected. Mine happens to be in Sagittarius, which is a difficult placement for Mercury. Big picture? Sure. Fine details? Uh... what were we talking about? But, as with everything in life, it's only a hindrance if we allow it to be.

Harnessing Your Pluto as a Writer

Pluto, the keeper of all things hidden, indicates the darkest part of ourselves in a birth chart. The most painful parts. The parts we all wish didn't exist. When you write, you, as a person not as a writer, inevitably seep into it. How you wish you were, how you wish you weren't. All parts of you become exposed.

I know it sounds terrifying. But, personally, I strive to use that. Those parts of ourselves are what makes for a compelling read. A character we love, a character we hate. One we see ourselves in and one we want to shake for making a multitude of bad decisions. I believe this all comes from our Pluto. But, that might be my generation's Pluto in Scorpio talking. Like all water signs, there's a mystical bent to a Scorpio's thinking; just with much darker undercurrents.

And, yes, Scorpio is known as the sex sign. But, sex for them is not for the pure enjoyment of it like Leo, or the physical connectivity like Taurus. For Scorpio, it's the deep, dark emotional connectivity they crave.  Again, use that. Not necessarily in the context of sex, although it obviously extends to that as well, more in the context of the emotional connectivity. With all water signs that desire for emotional connection exists, but with Scorpio, you don't forget about it when it happens. That's the experience you want to give your readers.

My Love/Hate Relationship with Jupiter

Jupiter, Jupiter, Jupiter. The planet of expansion, religion, and higher learning. Its placement can even be an indication of becoming a writer, as it is for me. (In Libra in the third house). And, as luck would have it for me, it's also the planet of extreme laziness.  Expansive thought and I just don't feel like doing anything with it today, maybe tomorrow.

I must admit though, Jupiter is a bit of a mystery to me. Even when I was researching it for this post, I still couldn't pinpoint exactly what it was I wanted to say. Nebulous, indeterminable, and full of hot air describes the Jupiter experience. Frustrating would be the succinct answer.

Even then, I can't fully hate it for two reasons. The first the previously mentioned aspect for writers. I finally got past the 'I don't feel like doing anything' feeling to actually finish my first book. The second, the third house is the house of siblings, combine that with relationship focused Libra and expansive Jupiter and you have the incredibly close relationship I have with my sister. Our dynamic inspired the dynamic of Sabine and Fig. And, I know for a fact, that the story would be missing something without that sisterly bond. This rambled a bit, but that might be my Mercury in Sagittarius (coincidentally ruled by Jupiter).

My Thoughts on Chiron

I am a neophyte when it comes to astrology, so my word is not law and will definitely not apply to everyone. Rather, this series will be about my particular chart and how it affects my writing; as well as how I use it to write. This first post isn't about a planet, but the asteroid Chiron. Chiron is the wounded healer and sits squarely in my first house, the house of the self. Meaning, I spent my formative years being ostracized and bullied. Though, I doubt mine is a singular experience. The introverts of the world have a connecting thread of life being extraordinarily difficult in the early years of life. And the later years. And some adult years.

Honestly, though, I wouldn’t change the placement. I know that, without it, I wouldn’t have published my first book. Without it, I would have gone about life the way we are expected to; which is a discomforting thought. All of my choices throughout the years led me to this, and I can’t be anything but grateful. Not to get cliched and overly dramatic on you, but being yourself is your greatest asset in life. Don’t waste it, use it.

This ended up way heavier than I intended, but the point remains. The wounds you suffer early in life will only help you later. Find what you’re good at. If you love it, great. If not, move on. Try to block out the noise from other people. Definitely try to block out the noise from yourself. Fulfill the other half of Chiron’s purpose, wound andheal. And remember, we’re never given more than we can handle.
